Dawley Individuals of note
Throughout its history Dawley has had many remarkable individuals associated with the town –individuals who have distinguished themselves in their lives: Samuel Peploe (1667-1752) rose to become Bishop of Chester, whilst Captain Mathew Webb became the first person in 1875 to swim the English Channel unaided. Albert Stanley MP is remembered as the great miners’ champion of the late 19C/early 20C, whilst the local politician George Chetwood acquired the honour of becoming ‘Mr Dawley’.
At the other end of the scale characters such as William Ball (1795-1852), a humble puddler at the Horsehay Ironworks, became famous as the ‘Shropshire Giant’ because of his great size. Much more recently Edith Pargeter (1913-1995), the writer Ellis Peters who created the character ‘Brother Cadfael’, received international recognition for the quality of her work, and the long tradition of public service to the community is continued today by such individuals as Michael Lowe.
